Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre to close temporarily

The Hellfire Pass interpretive Centre in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, will be closed for extensive maintenance from Monday 6 May to Sunday 26 May 2024 inclusive.

For safety purposes, visitors won’t have access to the Interpretive Centre and Memorial Walking Trail during this time.

The Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre and its memorial site, including the Walking Trail, are dedicated to those who suffered and died during the construction of the Burma–Thailand Railway during the Second World War. More than 60,000 Allied prisoners worked on the railway with an estimated 12,500 losing their lives, including 2,800 Australians. Some 75,000 rǒmusha (Asian labourers) also perished.

One of four winners to receive the Gold Standard Award in the 2023 Thailand Tourism awards earlier this year, the Centre offers a place for solemn commemoration and reflection for veterans, veteran families and the broader community.

DVA apologises for any inconvenience the Centre’s closure may cause, and encourages those interested to visit the improved site from 27 May 2024.

You can find out more about the Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre and its story on the Thailand page of the DVA website.
