The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) is monitoring fuel security conditions and potential impacts on veterans eligible for travel for treatment covered by their Veteran Card.
If a patient raises concerns about travel costs, GPs and other health providers can support continuity of care by considering DVA-funded transport arrangements.
This could include:
-
Where clinically appropriate, considering options that reduce the need to travel (for example, telehealth, coordinating appointments on the same day, or referral to a closer service).
-
Discussing transport options at the time of referral so veterans understand that eligible taxi, rideshare, community transport and public transport costs may be fully reimbursed by DVA.
-
Considering whether a veteran may access DVA’s Booked Car with Driver service and encourage its use where appropriate.
-
Encouraging veterans to book DVA-funded transport early once appointments are scheduled, particularly when multiple visits are anticipated.
Booked Car with Driver service
For older or more vulnerable patients, health providers can arrange travel for treatment on behalf of eligible patients through the Booked Car with Driver (BCWD) service. DVA organises the transport and there is no out-of-pocket cost for the patient.
Information about the access criteria is here: Booked Car with Driver Service.
The quickest way to book is through the online transport booking system. Veterans can also book the service themselves through MyService or by calling 1800 550 455.
