Right of Return Cards: helping veterans get home sooner

Every year, thousands of veterans rely on DVA’s Booked Car with Driver (BCWD) service to attend medical appointments, with almost 30,000 veterans completing more than 650,000 funded trips in 2025 alone. This service plays an important role in supporting eligible veterans to access the care they need with no out-of-pocket costs.

As a health provider, you can arrange the BCWD service on behalf of eligible DVA Veteran Card holders who need support travelling to and from medical treatment. Right of Return cards offer a simple way to streamline return journeys, saving time for both your practice and your patients.

What is a Right of Return card?

When using the BCWD service, veteran patients should receive a Right of Return card from the driver when they arrive at their health appointment. The card contains the transport provider details needed to arrange return travel. Instead of contacting DVA who then contacts the transport provider, health providers or the patient can use the card to contact the transport provider directly for the trip home. By quoting the patient’s DVA file number and pickup location, a driver can be arranged to collect the patient after their appointment. If a patient is not provided with a Right of Return card, please encourage them to request one when travelling to their next appointment using BCWD.

Ways to arrange BCWD for your eligible veteran patients

Health providers can arrange travel for treatment in several ways:

  • Call DVA on 1800 550 455

The online transport booking system is the quickest way for health care providers to arrange travel for eligible patients. To access the system,  you’ll need a Provider Digital Access (PRODA) account, which allows secure access to Australian Government services.

Your support in using Right of Return cards, booking in advance, and choosing online booking channels helps deliver a more efficient, reliable and timely transport service.
