A message from the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust
Did you train or work at the Middle Head / Gubbuh Gubbuh military site on Sydney Harbour?
Middle Head / Gubbuh Gubbuh is a nationally significant place overlooking the entrance to Sydney Harbour, with nearly 200 years of military history.
From the early 1800s, its natural vantage and bushland cover made it an ideal defensive position and one of Australia’s earliest fortification sites. In the decades that followed, it became a major training hub across air, sea and land, and played a key role in the defence of Sydney during the First and Second World Wars. The Australian Army maintained a presence at Middle Head / Gubbuh Gubbuh until the 1990s, and the Royal Australian Navy continues nearby at its HMAS Penguin base in Balmoral.
The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust is continuing its research into Middle Head / Gubbuh Gubbuh's history. We want to learn more about the stories of people who lived and worked on the site especially during the Vietnam War period. These stories would be shared with the public through interpretive signage, website, programs, research collection and in the future interpretation centre.
To help achieve this, we want to hear from former Defence personnel who trained or worked at Middle Head / Gubbuh Gubbuh to better understand the site’s history and document personal experiences. We’re especially keen to get in touch with people from 10 Terminal Regiment, and those who undertook the Vietnam-era Code of Conduct course with the School of Military Intelligence.
If you’re able to contribute, please contact Michelle DeCarteret at michelle.decarteret@harbourtrust.gov.au.
