Long Tan Bursaries awarded to veteran families

Over the past month, 37 children and grandchildren of Vietnam veterans have been celebrated for their achievements of being awarded the 2025 Long Tan Bursary at ceremonies across the country.

They will each receive up to $12,000, over three years to help with the costs of their education at an Australian university, TAFE college or registered training organisation

The 2025 recipients are studying across an impressive array of fields, including engineering, healthcare, business, law and the arts. The table below shows the breakdown of recipients across the country.

The bursary scheme is named after the Battle of Long Tan, one of the largest battles fought by Australians in the Vietnam War - on 18 August 1966, Delta Company, Royal Australian Regiment, fought an ‘encounter’ battle to defeat enemy forces in the Long Tan rubber plantation.

In 2026 Australia will mark 60 years since the Battle of Long Tan, a day now commemorated as Vietnam Veterans’ Day.

Australian Veterans' Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT) administers the Long Tan Bursary scheme on behalf of DVA. Applications for the 2026 Long Tan Bursary are open until 31 October.

More information on the Long Tan Bursary, including eligibility criteria and how to apply, can be found on the Long Tan Bursary page of the DVA website.
