Honouring veterans of the Indonesian Confrontation

Today we acknowledge the service and sacrifice of the more than 3,000 Australians called into action during the Indonesian Confrontation, 60 years on from the official end to the conflict.

They served in Borneo, on the Malay Peninsula, and in the surrounding seas.

In particular we remember the 22 Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice and the eight who were wounded.

When the newly federated state of Malaysia faced strong opposition from Indonesia, Australian forces were deployed to assist alongside those of Malaysia, Britain, New Zealand, and Singapore to help support stability in the region.

Australians from all three branches of the armed services were deployed to the conflict from 1964, ending with the signing of a treaty between Indonesia and Malaysia in August 1966.
