Roy's reflection
25 years ago (October 2001), at the behest of Prime Minister John Howard, the Australian Defence Force was tasked in preventing people smugglers coming to Australia. His famous quote 'We will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come' led the ADF to deploy the Navy, Army with support from the Airforce to interdict and turn around the people smugglers. This was known as Operation Relex. I was warned out as the Army Platoon Commander from 5/7 RAR for Transient Security Element (TSE) 1, and subsequently deployed with 50 soldiers on TSE 2 on HMAS Arunta.
