Veteran and Family Support Officers
Veteran and Family Support Officers (VFSOs) sit within the Veteran and Family Wellbeing Agency, which focuses on supporting the wellbeing of veterans and families of veterans at any stage in life, particularly transition to a predominantly civilian life. VFSOs are located on over 60 Defence bases nationally. They provide personalised support, guidance and education to veterans and their families on eligibility for DVA benefits and entitlements during and after service, in addition to broader supports via ex-service organisations and various government departments such as Services Australia and the NDIS.
A VFSO will listen, take time to understand what matters to you and your family, and help you connect to the right supports at the right time.
Support may include the following:
-
Show you how to use MyService and other online tools
-
Explain how to submit DVA claims and access treatment via your Veteran Card
-
Provide tailored support if you are medically separating from Defence
-
Guide you and your family through transition to civilian life
-
Work with others involved in your transition support
-
Refer you to a Wellbeing Case Coordinator if you or your family’s wellbeing needs require a higher level of ongoing support.
Engaging early and meeting with a VFSO can help you to prepare for a successful transition, whenever that may occur. Family members and support persons are welcome to attend VFSO appointments on base or in the community.
