A message from Invictus Australia
Invictus Australia is pleased to announce that Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are now open for the 2027 Adaptive Sports Program. This intake will prepare participants for the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, taking place from 10 to 17 July 2027.
The program provides a structured, evidence‑informed pathway to support the recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration of current and former serving defence personnel who have become wounded, injured or ill during, or as a result of, service. Selection is not based on sporting performance, but on an individual’s recovery potential and personal readiness, ensuring the program remains inclusive and focused on meaningful, long‑term outcomes.
Veterans who have participated in previous programs highlight how sport has played a significant role in their recovery journeys. One former participant shared:
‘I would encourage any veteran to have a crack and get involved with the Invictus community.’
Another reflected on the broader impact of the experience, saying ‘Sport has given me a new mission post‑service. It’s helped me realise that I’m not alone, there’s a community of veterans facing similar challenges. The biggest impact the experience had on me was the feeling of coming home having completed a significant step in the transition process and how important it was for me to be involved in community sport.’
These lived experiences are strongly supported by findings from 2 foundational research reports released by Invictus Australia last year. The studies demonstrate that sport plays a crucial role in many aspects of veteran wellbeing by fostering social support and connection; strengthening family relationships; helping veterans rediscover identity and purpose and supporting early intervention and help‑seeking.
Adam Pine, Director of Teams and Events at Invictus Australia, emphasised the importance of the Adaptive Sports Program and the organisation’s commitment to supporting participants beyond competition:
‘International events such as the Invictus Games provide veterans with a reminder of what they are capable of,’ Adam said. ‘Through Invictus Australia, support continues long after the final event, with our team working closely with veterans to maintain their connection to community sport. It’s through these ongoing opportunities that individuals can continue their recovery, build meaningful relationships, and find renewed purpose.’
EOIs for the 2027 Adaptive Sports Program are open from 29 January 2026 to 31 March 2026. Former serving veterans who are wounded, injured or ill are encouraged to learn more, and submit an EOI by visiting the Invictus Australia website.
(The Adaptive Sports Program is delivered in partnership with the ADF. At this time, EOIs are open to former serving veterans, with the ADF to confirm the application process for current serving personnel and communicate this through internal channels.)
