Commemorative coin marks 25 years since Australian service in Afghanistan began

To mark 25 years since Australian service in Afghanistan (2001– 2021) began, DVA is releasing a commemorative coin in recognition of that service and its lasting impact on veterans and families of veterans.

The coin recognises all Australians who served in the Afghanistan War (2001–2014) and conflicts in Afghanistan (2015 to present). It honours Australians who lost their lives during or as a result of their service and acknowledge the physical and mental impacts that service has had on many of our veterans and their families.

On Sunday 11 October 2026, DVA will hold a national commemorative service at the Australian War Memorial to commemorate and honour all Australians who served. The coin and commemorative arrangements have been informed by consultation with veterans and families of veterans connected to service in Afghanistan.

The non-monetary commemorative coin is intended as a keepsake, similar to a Defence challenge coin, and will be available at the service to all attendees. Veterans who cannot attend the national commemorative service will still be able to request a coin, so that all members of the Afghanistan veteran community have the opportunity to receive this commemoration. Further information is available on DVA’s website.
