Overview

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs administers the Protection of Word “Anzac” Act 1920 (Cth). On behalf of the minister, the DVA administers the Protection of Word “Anzac” Regulations (Cth) under the Act.

The Regulations affect a small number of individuals and organisations each year. It’s free for individuals and entities to apply to DVA for a permit to use the word ‘Anzac’ so there are no cost-recovery arrangements.

We’ve reported our regulatory performance under the Word Anzac Regulatory Framework (WARF) since 2022.

About the framework

Since 2016, DVA has published an annual externally validated self-assessment report against key performance indicators under the Regulator Performance Framework (RPF) between 2016 and 2021, when the RPF ceased.

On 1 July 2021, DVA developed a new reporting model, the Word Anzac Regulator Framework (WARF), adopting best practice principles of good regulation:

  • continuous improvement and building trust
  • risk based and data driven
  • collaboration and engagement.

The first report published under the new reporting model was the 2021–22 WARF report, published in 2023.
