DVA is continuing to support health providers to participate in the compensation process by clarifying the role of treating doctors, improving guidance on what information is needed to support a claim, and ensuring medical assessment and report guidance rates remain current.
From 1 July 2026, the compensation medical assessment and report guidance rates paid to providers were indexed and consequently have increased by 3.3%, ensuring that rates keep pace with increasing costs.
Making the system clearer and easier to navigate
We are continuing to simplify and clarify compensation processes to support providers in their day-to-day work.
Where possible, DVA prefers information for compensation claims to come from a veteran’s treating doctor — which means the GP or non-GP specialist involved in the veteran’s ongoing care. This is because treating doctors are often best placed to provide relevant clinical history, current diagnosis, treatment information and functional impacts.
Guidance available on the DVA website explains who is considered a treating doctor, how this applies in the compensation process, and what is needed to support a claim. This approach helps support continuity between the compensation process and the veteran’s ongoing care.
Practical support for providers
Providers can support the compensation process by providing relevant clinical information and assessment within their scope of practice. They are not expected to determine whether a claim should be accepted — that decision is made by DVA.
Consultation with external stakeholders, including peak medical groups, is underway to provide better guidance on the compensation system and better support providers to assist veterans and DVA in relation to claims.
Resources are being developed to help providers understand:
-
what information is needed (and not needed) in a compensation report
-
when above‑rate fees may apply
-
how billing and reporting can be simplified.
Ongoing engagement
We will continue to engage with providers to support ongoing improvements. A virtual provider town hall will provide updates and an opportunity for providers to ask questions. More information will be available soon. To stay informed about the latest provider updates, news and initiatives, subscribe to our Provider e-News.
Supporting better outcomes for veterans
We remain committed to working with health providers to improve the compensation system and support veterans to access the entitlements and care they need.
By strengthening guidance, simplifying processes and investing in provider support, we are helping ensure veterans can access coordinated, high‑quality care when they need it.
