New guidance on the use of medicinal cannabis for chronic non-cancer pain in veterans

New resources are available to support healthcare providers prescribing medicinal cannabis to veterans with chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP).

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) recently undertook an independent review into the use of medicinal cannabis for veterans with CNCP. Drawing on the findings of the review and consultation with clinical experts, UNSW developed an Evidence Report and Clinical Guidance to support healthcare providers, veterans and families.

The guidance supports healthcare providers in decision-making regarding the initiation, monitoring and discontinuation of medicinal cannabinoid therapy for veterans with CNCP.

The guidance aims to reduce variability in care for veterans. It promotes informed, patient-centred and practical decision-making and is based on the evidence review which addresses knowledge gaps for this emerging treatment.

The resources support discussions between healthcare providers, veterans and families about medicinal cannabis, how it may be used, and what to expect from treatment.

This complements recent updates to DVA's Medicinal Cannabis Framework and support veterans to access safe, high-quality healthcare.

Healthcare providers caring for veterans are encouraged to review the guidance.
