Health providers, hospital physicians and hospital discharge planners can arrange non-emergency ambulance transport for eligible Veteran Card holders with specific medical needs.
When transport may be available
Non-emergency ambulance transport may be available where a Veteran Card holder:
-
requires a stretcher for safe and dignified transport
-
requires medical support during transport
-
has a condition that may impact physical appearance and requires appropriate support during transport
-
has continence support needs that necessitate a specific mode of transport.
Confirming eligibility and arranging transport
Only health providers arrange non-emergency ambulance transport directly with an ambulance provider. Veterans, their representatives, transport providers and DVA cannot book non-emergency ambulance services.
If you are unsure whether a Veteran Card holder is eligible for DVA-funded ambulance services, you can seek advice and request confirmation from DVA before transport is arranged or on the next practical business day. Approval is required for interfacility transfers of admitted patients or when using a non-emergency ambulance provider that does not have a payment agreement with DVA.
