A message from Veterans Can…

Veterans Can… is a growing international social enterprise built on a simple but powerful belief: that military service leaves most veterans stronger, more capable and more connected than ever. Rather than focusing solely on challenges, Veterans Can… exists to create a balanced and optimistic narrative around life after, and because of, service – one rooted in connection, community and celebration.

Founded by Garrath Williams, a dual British and Australian Army veteran and long-time advocate, the organisation has quickly evolved into a global community platform designed to connect veterans, support veteran-owned businesses and create meaningful opportunities to continue serving society in new ways. At its core is the belief that veterans are not “broken” and need to be fixed, but are highly capable individuals, are part of a supportive community – and have enormous value to offer.

For Australians, the Veterans Can… mission feels naturally aligned with the values that underpin the ADF and wider veteran community: mateship, resilience, humour, service and practical support. This shared culture is already helping build meaningful collaboration between UK and Australian veteran networks.

One clear example is the Veterans Can-Do Exchange program – an Australian-based initiative, in partnership with HomeFront Australia and OpOz, that aims to connect veterans through shared experiences, leadership opportunities and collaborative projects. Veterans Can… is also helping bring the hugely successful Veteran Games concept to the UK through the Veteran Games UK initiative. Inspired by the Australian movement, the games focus on connection, camaraderie and wellbeing through inclusive military-themed, team-based competition.

Our organisation’s growing partnership with veteran-owned Powder Monkey Brewing Co further reflects this expanding UK-Australian collaboration. Powder Monkey brews a dedicated “Veterans Can…” Pilsner in Sydney, creating both a conversation starter and a fundraising vehicle for veteran-focused initiatives. Discussions are also underway with RSL clubs and sub-branches about stocking the beer within their venues, helping create visible, community-based support for the movement across the nation.

Veterans Can… is not attempting to replace existing ex-service organisations or support structures. Instead, it complements them by creating a positive, proactive and internationally connected community that celebrates what veterans can still achieve together. For Australians looking to engage with forward-thinking veteran initiatives, it offers an opportunity to help shape a genuinely global movement built on shared service, shared identity and shared purpose.
