Golf drives better mental health for veterans
No one should navigate mental health challenges alone.
That belief inspired Air Force and Navy veteran Joe to establish a dedicated golf club for Defence veterans in Townsville – a place where former service members can reconnect, rebuild confidence and support one another.
Motivated by this mission, Joe shared his idea with mates, sparking the interest of Army veteran Matt in helping bring the idea to life. Together, they coined the slogan: “Improving veterans’ mental health – one round at a time”.
Drawing on their military experience and determination, the pair then turned the concept into reality, achieving what can only be described as a “hole in one” in under a year.
In that short time, they successfully registered the not-for-profit organisation – the NQ Defence Veterans Golf Club – and secured 2 host golf courses. They have also welcomed 74 financial members, gained sponsorship support, and established weekly games and regular club competitions.
Club President Joe and Club Secretary Matt understand first-hand how challenging the transition from military service can be.
‘It can really affect your mental health, especially if you have been medically discharged,’ they agreed. ‘You can lose your identity when you lose the uniform, and it’s important to rediscover that.’
For both men, golf has been a lifeline, restoring routine, purpose and social connection. They have also seen the same positive impact among members, whose ages range from veterans in their early 20's to the club’s oldest player at 82.
‘We’ve all been through similar experiences, and we know how challenging it can be to find a sense of purpose after military life,’ they said. ‘When our members come to play golf, we just want them to be themselves. The only thing we ask is which service they were in.’
Now supported by an 11-member committee, after each game members gather for a social catch-up to build connection and, when needed, share referrals to support services that have helped others.
The NQ Defence Veterans Golf Club hopes its success will inspire veterans across Australia to establish similar initiatives within their own communities. The club continues to grow and welcomes new members from all services and all levels of golfing experience.
