Veterans and family members of veterans can apply to volunteer as representatives at overseas Anzac Day commemorative services, supporting DVA’s delivery of these services and honouring those who served and the families who supported them.
Applications close on 8 November 2026. An online information session on Thursday, 22 October 2026 offers an opportunity to find out more. Details on how to join and apply are below.
Each year, thousands of Australians make a pilgrimage to overseas Anzac Day commemorative services, visiting sites of profound significance to our military legacy, to remember and honour those who have served our nation.
Attending these services at historic places such as at Gallipoli, Villers-Bretonneux, Sandakan, Hellfire Pass, Isurava and Singapore, ensures stories of service, sacrifice and resilience are preserved, their memory carried on within current and future generations.
The veteran community is at the heart of these commemorative services.
For many, the opportunity to take part in and support DVA's delivery of an overseas Anzac Day service translates to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Incorporating the lived experience of members of the veteran community brings with it an authenticity, a deeper understanding of service and sense of compassion. Their active role maintains and strengthens the bonds between those who served in the past and those who continue to serve today, ensuring the legacy of service and sacrifice lives on.
Standing at Gallipoli at dawn, reflecting among the graves at Villers-Bretonneux, or reflecting on the terrible suffering along the Thai-Burma Railway provides a powerful and compelling connection to our nation's wartime history.
Previous participants have described the experience as deeply meaningful, humbling and profoundly moving.
’Volunteering at Villers-Bretonneux gave me a completely new appreciation for the impact of Australian service overseas. Being part of the team delivering these commemorations allowed me to contribute in a way that felt both meaningful and deeply personal. It reinforced the importance of preserving these stories for future generations.’ - Megan Banton, 2025 veteran volunteer.
