Protecting veterans from exploitation: knowing the signs

Most people and organisations who support veterans do the right thing and provide high quality care and honest advice. Unfortunately, there are a small number of individuals and businesses that seek to profit from the veteran support system rather than act in the best interests of those they are meant to help.

DVA is committed to identifying this behaviour and reducing the risk of harm to veterans and misuse of public resources. We act decisively and proportionately to protect the integrity of the support system in response to serious breaches.

Exploitative behaviour can take many forms, including:

  • charging excessive fees

  • recommending unnecessary treatment or assessments

  • making unrealistic promises about compensation outcomes

  • providing false or misleading information

  • encouraging claims that are not supported by evidence.

If you see or experience concerning behaviour, please:

  • call us on 1800 838 372

You can choose to remain anonymous when making a report.

We take all reports seriously.

Information from our community, including veterans, families of veterans, and providers is important in helping us to detect wrongdoing. Raising concerns early helps protect veterans and strengthen the system that supports them.
