New Scott Palmer Services Centre to support veterans facing homelessness in the Northern Territory

This latest news item contains information that may be distressing to some people.

Open Arms provides free, confidential 24-hour counselling and support on 1800 011 046. Any serving member or veteran with at least one day of continuous full-time service can access support through Open Arms, as can their immediate family. Visit the Open Arms website

Backed by a $3.245 million grant (inc GST) from the Australian Government, The Salvation Army (Northern Territory) has been funded to establish the new Scott Palmer Services Centre, a dedicated transitional housing facility designed to help veterans and families of veterans who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness in the Northern Territory.

More than a roof over someone’s head, the Centre will also provide wrap around support to veterans and families of veterans, with access to health care, employment assistance, and connections to veteran-specific services like Open Arms and the Darwin Veterans’ and Families’ Hub.

This Centre is named in honour of Private Scott Travis Palmer, a respected Commando who tragically lost his life during operations in Afghanistan in 2010. Scott was born and raised in the Northern Territory and served with distinction in East Timor, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He was known for his courage, professionalism, and deep bond with his fellow soldiers. His legacy of service lives on through this initiative.

Homelessness rates in the NT are up to 12 times higher than the national average. This initiative aligns with recommendations from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, which highlighted homelessness as a major risk factor for poor mental health and suicidality, especially during the transition from military to civilian life.

This initiative is part of a broader national effort to ensure no veteran is left behind. Stable housing is a cornerstone of wellbeing and suicide prevention. The Scott Palmer Services Centre is a big step forward in making sure veterans get the support they need when they need it.

The Salvation Army (Northern Territory) will identify a suitable property, and further timelines will be confirmed once a site is secured.
