The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has released three reports analysing data from the 2021 Census:
The total number of veterans in each of these specific communities is relatively low, which has made it difficult to report on these populations in the past. The introduction of a question on ADF service in the 2021 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census of Population and Housing (the Census), has enabled this population level analysis of veterans to be undertaken.
The research, which was commissioned by DVA, will help to reduce knowledge gaps and improve understanding of these sub populations. Improving our understanding will allow DVA to ensure that supports are tailored to cultural, health and population need.
There are still some data limitations, due to smaller sample sizes. Potential additional data sources and future directions for further research have been discussed.
The AIHW and DVA have a longstanding strategic partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding, which aims to develop a comprehensive profile of the health and welfare of Australia’s ex-serving population.
