If you have received an assistance dog through DVA, or you have a DVA approved privately sourced psychiatric assistance dog, you can claim reimbursement for reasonable upkeep and maintenance costs. This could include:

  • veterinary care
  • routine treatments such as vaccinations, worming and flea prevention
  • pet insurance, and
  • everyday costs like food and grooming.

Please note that travel costs associated with these activities (for example, travel to veterinary appointments or to collect pet food or medication) are not reimbursed.

A quarterly limit of $645 applies to everyday upkeep and maintenance costs.

When submitting your claim, you must include this form (D9401) and paid, itemised receipts.

We do not reimburse costs for assistance dogs obtained outside of DVA approved arrangements.
