Support for eligible de facto partners of veterans after separation

Eligible de facto partners of veterans may now be able to continue receiving the Partner Service Pension (PSP) from the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) for 12 months after separation from their partner.

Where the former partner has experienced domestic violence in their relationship with the veteran, they may also be able to continue to receive the PSP indefinitely.

If you treat or provide support services to DVA clients who may benefit from these changes, you are encouraged to advise them to contact DVA on 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372).

Married former partners are already able to access PSP under these arrangements.

These new arrangements provide non-married partners with the same PSP eligibility as married partners.

The changes apply to de facto relationship separations which have occurred on or after 20 September 2019. For separations before this date, only legally-married former partners may continue to access PSP.

In all instances, PSP eligibility ends when the former partner enters into a relationship with another person.
