Learn about how DVA supports homeless veterans

DVA TV has spoken with a Navy veteran Dani who found herself homeless after a relationship breakdown. She talks movingly about how Open Arms – Veterans & Families Counselling helped get her back on her feet.

'I joined the Navy in 2003,” she told DVA TV. “They were the four best years of my life. But during those years, I had challenges with partners [who subjected me to] physical, mental and emotional abuse. I hit rock-bottom. I was depressed, suicidal. No one cared. I was trying to battle everything on my own.'

In February 2022, Dani found herself having to sleep underneath a bridge.

'Thank God it was summer,” she says. “Then I came across a message board at the local shops advertising Open Arms. The person who answered the phone was a Godsend. Having Open Arms in my life when I was at my most vulnerable was the most relief I’ve had. Having them help me rebuild [through] counselling, giving me reasons to live, got me back to being a human.

'For all those veterans who are struggling with homelessness, home life, stresses, even if you think it’s minor, seek help.'

Open Arms provides counselling to anyone who has served at least one day in the ADF, and their families. This can include support in linking eligible clients to appropriate specialist housing and homelessness services.
