The Sandakan Memorial Remembrance plaque

The Sandakan Memorial Park is a tribute to the Allied Prisoners of War who suffered and died there, and on the marches to Ranau, and the local people who risked their lives to assist them.

The Anzac Day Dawn Service is open to the public. Details are as follows:

Venue: Sandakan Memorial Park, Sabah, Malaysia
Date: 25 April (annually)
Time: 4.20 am: Site opens
5:10 am: Public must be seated
5:30 am: Commemorative Dawn Service commences

The Dawn Service follows the same format as official Anzac Day services conducted in Australia and overseas.

Advance registration

Members of the public intending to attend the Dawn service are encouraged to register (for free) in advance.

Registration assists organisers to plan ahead and helps ensure a safe, respectful and smooth experience for attendees.

Important notes

Access to the memorial site for the Dawn Service

The Dawn service site is located at the top of the park, approximately a 10 min walk from the park entry gates. The paved pathways and timber boardwalks can be slippery and visitors are advised to take extra care.

There will be lighting on the pathway however during the pre-dawn the park is quite dark. DVA and park staff will be available to assist and guide. Suitable footwear is strongly recommended.

Seating

There is generally plenty of seating available for members of the public, with the front rows reserved for officials and speakers. You are also welcome to stand behind the seating on either side of the memorial, however, please do not stand behind the memorial obelisk during the service.

Gunfire Breakfast

Following the Dawn Service, all visitors are invited to the Gunfire Breakfast at the Interpretive Pavilion, where complimentary food and refreshments will be served.

Other information

Visitors are reminded that:

  • Late April weather in Sabah is hot and humid. Visitors are advised to dress appropriately and bring wet weather attire should rain be forecast, as there is no shelter at the memorial site. (Jackets and ties are not required).
  • Insect repellent is recommended.
  • Toilets are available at the Visitors Centre at the front gate, and near the Interpretive Centre at the top of the park.
  • Smoking and naked flames are not permitted at the park and the surrounding environment at any time.
  • Mobile phones must be switched to silent during the service.
