'Scootaville' charity ride to raise money for Legacy

Following last year’s successful event, on 24 August this year, 50 people – mostly veterans – will once again set off from Ipswich in Queensland, on small motor scooters, for the 18-day, 2,500-kilometre trip to Army’s Lavarack Barracks in Townsville. The event will raise funds for Legacy, that wonderful charity which is there for the partners and children of those who gave their lives or their health for our country.

Nicknamed ‘Scootaville’, the trip has been organised by the Radschool Association Ltd, a registered charity that represents the men and women who were trained by the Air Force to maintain or operate its electronic equipment. Association Secretary and Treasurer, Trevor Benneworth says the trip will take 18 days and involve passing through and overnighting in a variety of iconic Queensland towns including Dalby, Roma, Charleville, Blackall, Longreach, Winton, Cloncurry, Richmond, Hughenden, Charters Towers and finally Townsville.

‘Apart from raising funds for Legacy, the event provides an opportunity for the men and women taking part to form new friendships, meet some wonderful people, enjoy some outback hospitality,’ Trevor says. ‘And all in a friendly and social atmosphere. It’s a chance to mix with their peers and discuss any troubles they might have.’

Trevor says that if you would like to be part of this great event there are still a few spots available. You can come as either a rider or as a supporter, though riders will need to hold a current motorcycle licence. You don’t need your own scooter, because for a small fee everything is provided, including riding jacket, helmet, bedding etc. Councils along the route have made available their showgrounds and we’ll overnight in their pavilions.

The Association is raising funds through corporate sponsorship. If your organisation would like to sponsor Scootaville, please contact Trevor at the email address above. All contributions are tax deductible.
