Scootaville Charity Ride
On 1 September 2022, a fleet of 20 50cc-scooters will set off from RAAF Base Amberley near Brisbane on a 2,100 kilometre road trip to Townsville.
Nicknamed ‘Scootaville’, the journey is the brainchild of Trevor Benneworth and the RAAF Radschool Association. The trip is designed to help veterans foster a sense of community and camaraderie. It is also raising funds for Legacy along the way.
Trevor said the idea is to get former ADF members together so they can talk among themselves.
‘I’ve got problems, the other bloke’s got problems and you realise you’re not alone,’ Trevor says.
The road trip will begin at RAAF Base Amberley just outside of Brisbane and will head west. Over 16 days, the scooters will pass through several regional Queensland towns, charting a course to Kilcoy, Mundubbera, Longreach, Winton, Hughenden, Charters Towers, and finally into Townsville.
Forty riders will take part in the journey, 2 riders for each scooter. One person will take the scooter’s helm, while the second person will ride on a bus provided by the Kedron Wavell RSL. This gives each rider a chance to rest between stints on the scooter.
Travelling ahead of the convoy, will be a ute and chuck wagon, also courtesy of the Kedron Wavell RSL. They will offer coffee, cold drinks and snacks to the riders when they stop to take a break. Corporate sponsors, Woolworth and IGA, are also helping out with food donations to make sure everyone stays refreshed and alert in the saddle.
After several delays due to COVID, Scootaville will leave the starting grid on 1 September at RAAF Base Amberley, and cross the chequered flag in Townsville on 16 September.
Scootaville promises to be a grand adventure and a lot of fun for everyone involved. It is a great example of how important it is to foster community and connections between veterans and how support can be found among comrades.
More information on Scootaville is available on the RAAF Radschool Association page.
