Memorial Day for National Servicemen in Wallaroo, South Australia

A commemorative service was held in the South Australian town of Wallaroo this morning to commemorate National Servicemen’s Day. (It is held each year on the Saturday closest to 14 February).

Over some years, with persistence and dedication, former Nasho Garry Brown of Port Clinton lobbied the Copper Coast Council to support his vision of installing flagpoles at the commemorative site in Wallaroo. Today’s commemoration was the first in Wallaroo with the flag pole installed.

Accessing the Saluting Their Service (STS) Commemorative Grants Program, with letters of support from the Member for Narungga, Fraser Ellis and Federal Member for Grey, Rowan Ramsey, a grant application was supported by the Copper Coast Council.

Anglican locum tenens Mark Sibly conducted the poignant service, his wife Sarah at his side, while the Legion of Frontiersmen Cadet Corps formed the catafalque party.

The aims of the Cadet Corps are to provide military, discipline, leadership, teamwork and life skills for children and teenagers aged between 8 to 18 years of age. They also receive first aid training, fitness and self-defence training from qualified instructors throughout the year. Other activities include weekend camps, field exercises, bush survival skills, search and rescue techniques, radio communications, navigation, military history and rifle drill (for 11 years and above).
