Stakeholder Engagement Manager (SEM) & Contract Manager Update

Staffing Updates

The DVA Rehabilitation Program Section has seen a number of staffing changes over the last few weeks, with Angela White returning to Household Services in the Rehabilitation Services Section, and Peach Reid moving permanently into the SEM role. RPS is currently recruiting for a new Contract Manager, and will update you on the outcome shortly. For now, Kim Stephens (Assistant Director Rehabilitation Procurement and Contract Management) will be covering the role, with Peach’s support.

To assist in streamlining communications, the SEM will now be your point of contact for ALL questions, queries and feedback. Please use the REHAB.SEM [at] inbox. Your email will then be managed and responded to by either the SEM or Contract Manager, depending on the topic.

Quality Reports

The Contract Manager will be phoning DVA Rehabilitation Providers in February to discuss the November 2019 data and quality report process. Thank you for returning these, and in some instances, adapting your data collection processes to ensure the information DVA requires is collected in an ongoing manner.

The July-December 2019 Quality Reports are due for submission to REHAB.CONTRACTS [at] by Friday, 14 February 2020. Thank you for working with DVA to retrospectively collect data from July 2019. We recognise that RPS didn’t originally intend to collect this information, so we appreciate your willingness to adapt and contribute.

New Factsheet on managing invoices

A factsheet designed to help make the rehabilitation provider invoice and payment process more streamlined and efficient is currently under development. It is anticipated this factsheet will be available in March 2020.


Rehabilitation Provider Information Session

The next Rehabilitation Provider Information Session (RPIS) is on Thursday 20 February 2020 from 2:30pm to 4:00pm (ADST – Australian Daylight Saving Time).

This session will be video conferenced nationally. Further information will be sent out in early February, including an agenda and location and dial in details.

AT-Ease and Open Arms – Stronger Together

New Resources for Health Professionals Working With the Military Community

Open Arms – Veterans & Families Counselling has recently boosted their support services through the nationwide expansion of their National Community and Peer Program which includes ‘lived-experience’ Community and Peer Advisors.

The National Community and Peer Program has been successfully breaking down barriers to care, improving relationships with key community groups, and reducing the stigma for veterans around mental health and seeking help, since it was first piloted in Townsville in 2017/18.

The program connects veterans and family members, who may be struggling with their mental health, with peers that have served in the Australian Defence Force—or had family members who have served—and have had the experience of accessing mental health services for their own wellbeing.

The peers are successfully building stronger relationships with regional service providers and the ex-service community to ensure clients are provided with the best possible care.

By mid-2020 Open Arms will have 43 Community and Peer advisors, made up of veterans from all three ADF services and family representatives, augmenting their clinical capability across Australia.

The Health Professionals pages aim to assist clinicians in understanding the military experience using professional development resources such as webinars, courses and programs. They also offer information to assist with understanding specific veteran mental health issues, maintaining clinical best practice, practitioner self-care and clinical guidelines.

You can also find out how to become a valuable member of the Open Arms team as an in-house clinician or as part of their nationwide Outreach Program Counsellor network. With excellent administrative and clinical support, including a 24/7 telephone support service and professional intake assessment team, health professionals have an opportunity to make a real difference and see tangible clinical and wellbeing outcomes for clients with complex needs. #StrongerTogether


Veteran Health Check logoVeteran Health Checks for all former ADF members

Transitioning can be a busy and challenging time for veterans and their families. There are many competing priorities to sort out – from planning a move, finding a new home, new schools and a new job. Your health can often be forgotten.

The impact of the bushfires is being felt across the nation and may present additional health challenges to those veterans and their families who live in areas directly affected, in areas that may be indirectly impacted by the bushfires, those involved in fighting the fires or undertaking recovery efforts.

DVA understands these challenges and is committed to providing veterans with easier access to health care, particularly in times of crisis. All ADF members who transition on or after 1 July 2019, and served at least 1 days’ continuous full-time service, can now access a comprehensive fully-funded health assessment from their GP each year for the first five years following transition.

The Veteran Health Check is specifically designed for veterans and can be accessed through your community or family GP. It can assist you and your GP to identify and support the onset of physical and mental health conditions that are common in the years following transition and organise for early and targeted referrals. Your GP may also make referrals for additional tests, treatment or assessment by other health professionals, and can refer you to relevant DVA services or programs. You will need your DVA Health Card to access annual Veteran Health Checks. Make sure to check that your GP accepts DVA Health Cards when making an appointment.

If you transitioned from the ADF prior to 1 July 2019, you will still be able to access a one-off comprehensive Veteran Health Check (also known as the one-off ADF post-discharge health assessment) from your GP at any time after you transition. A Medicare rebate is available for this.

Looking after your health is important during times of transition, particularly during times of extraordinary hardship, such as those resulting from the bushfires. Talk to your GP, tell them you have served in the ADF and ask them about the Veteran Health Check.
