Nev Cook's Navy career spans more than 32 years, after he served as both a Sailor and an Officer in the the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. Nev served on nine different ships and numerous shore establishments before deciding to transition out of the military.
With a growing family business, Nev chose a transition path to suit his family and their needs. Nev and his wife, Angie, established White Pillar Pty Ltd, a payroll, book-keeping and consulting business, in 2014. Nev decided on a graduated transition from service in early 2019, giving him the flexibility to work on the family business while staying fit, healthy and connected to Defence through the Reserves.
Nev proudly contributes back to the Defence community through the family business by employing Defence spouses and offering a flexible workplace. He also supports Indigenous and Local Touch Football teams and sporting associations.
In addition to the family business, Nev now holds two Reserve positions with Defence. He is the Deputy Director of Reserve Workforce Integration and the Pacific Sports Program Manager for ADF Sport. Nev values the opportunity to stay connected with the Navy and contribute through his diverse roles.
In their spare time, you'll find Nev and his wife spending time with their family, out in the garden or travelling across Australia or overseas. Living just outside of Queanbeyan in regional NSW, Nev enjoys the extra time he now has to spend with his children and grandchildren who live nearby.
Nev's advice to anyone thinking of transitioning is to prepare early, research career options and seek advice from others who have been through the process.
"Engage with your Career Manager regularly and let them know your aspirations, both personally and professionally," Nev said.
"Having this discussion, with your partner present if possible, can result in you remaining engaged with Defence for a longer period and able to deliver a pattern of service that suits both the Defence Force and you."
