Trained as an Air Intelligence Analyst, Michael Long served for eight years in the Royal Australian Air Force. He spent numerous years as a Geospacial Imagery Intelligence Analyst before moving into the cyber domain. Michael made the decision to transition out of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in 2018, and now works in information security at Lockheed Martin Australia. His new career sees him working on the SEA1000 project, ensuring the cyberworthiness of the Attack-class submarine.
Living in Adelaide with his wife and two young sons, Michael keeps busy spending time with his family and in his spare time, plays amateur league soccer.
His advice to anyone thinking of transitioning is to understand the value of your military training and experience.
“The skills and experience you gain in the ADF are uncommon in most civilian workplaces. Ensure that you understand how you can add value to your prospective employers through your unique experiences.”
