Feedback invited on how to commemorate ADF involvement in the Middle East

To recognise the service and sacrifice of Australians in the Middle East since 2001, the Minister for Defence announced that consultation was open regarding a national day of commemoration for Australia’s involvement in the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO). The consultation period opened on 19 July and will close on 1 August 2021.

It has been 20 years since Australia joined its allies in the Middle East after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. On 11 July this year, all Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel departed Afghanistan, marking the end of this military operation.

A national day of commemoration will allow the Australian community to reflect on and recognise the service and sacrifice of our Defence personnel and their families. This includes those who served in or supported operations in the MEAO.

The Australian Government, through the Department of Defence, is interested in the public’s views, and invites you to provide your input. You can share your views via the Department of Defence website.

The outcome of the consultation process will help determine what the national day of Commemoration will involve and when it will take place.

We understand that these issues may cause distress for Defence personnel, veterans and their families. Your health and wellbeing is the priority.
