The Heart Health Programme aims to help you increase your physical health and wellbeing through practical exercise, nutrition and lifestyle management support. It is a 52 week Programme and includes two physical activity sessions per week that are tailored to meet your needs and 12 health educational seminars.
The programme covers a range of topics including setting healthy goals, nutrition and healthy eating, physical activity, chronic conditions, quitting smoking, responsible alcohol consumption, back care, stress management and maintaining a healthy heart.
The Programme is offered in two formats – the Heart Health Group Programme and the Individual Heart Health Programme.
This Programme is delivered in groups of approximately 10-15. The group meets at a designated gym for weekly activity sessions and educational seminars. Experienced exercise and health professionals provide the participants with a structured and supervised fitness training schedule.
Veterans and peacekeepers living in rural, remote and outer metropolitan areas can access the Heart Health Programme via the correspondence version of the Programme. It has similar support to the regular Programme.
The Individual Heart Health Programme is delivered via correspondence over a 12-month period with participants having their own tailored physical activity Programme and health education modules. Participants are supported by their GP, a Programme Coordinator and a Health Consultant, who guide participants through the Programme.
The Individual Heart Health Programme provides the veteran community with better and more flexible access to information and education to give them the tools they need to improve their physical health and ultimately, to enjoy a healthier and happier lifestyle.
This programme was developed as an outcome of the Vietnam Veterans Health Studies in the 1990’s as a consequence of the health impacts of operational service. Consequently, the programme is available to ‘returned’ veterans and peacekeepers who have not previously participated in the programme.
Whilst former ADF members who only have peacetime service are not eligible for enrolment, if they have had liability for a disability or disabilities accepted under one or more of the relevant Acts, they may be eligible to access other services, such as exercise physiology, dependant on their accepted conditions and referral from a General Practitioner.
All participants are required to get a medical clearance from their General Practitioner before beginning.
This is a free Programme for all participants. Transport entitlements are not payable.

Prior to commencing the Heart Health Program, my health was average due to heart condition and knee replacement. Since commencing the program under the Health Coach’s guidance, my health and fitness has improved and now I continue to attend the gym on a regular basis. Am also watching my diet in an endeavour to maintain a healthy weight. I would certainly recommend others to attend program, the advantages are both physical and mental. It was the best thing I ever did, I think everyone who can do it, should do it.
Being an ADG in the Air Force has previously put me in good stead with fitness, but I have recently let myself go. The Heart Health program gave me the opportunity to train in a great fitness club to get my fitness and strength back, as well as the support of a Health Coach to help guide and motivate me to better fitness, nutrition and health. I lost 10kg in 3 months and my body is making a comeback. I now sleep better, eat better, communicate better, and have been told I am a better person for my efforts. My advice to any veteran that wants to get fit, or get back to the way they used to be is, do it for you, your health, your family, your vanity and sanity.

The Heart Health program has helped me to be a better husband, father, grandfather and friend to the people around me – having become fitter, lighter, and feeling happy with what I’ve achieved. With the support of my Health Coach and Nutritionist, I now exercise more frequently and eat a much healthier diet than before. My motivation comes from my family and coach support as well as feeling better about myself. I would certainly encourage all Veterans to participate in either a group or individual program. The benefits are exceptional.

The Heart Health Program has definitely made a difference. I am feeling fitter, definitely slimmer and have met a new group of friends through cycling. The main thing I got out of the Program is a feeling of just being so much fitter, not just physical but mental as well. It was the guidance that I got from my Health Coach Sonny that was so great and kept me on track. I set goals with Sonny and I’ve met them all. I’ve lost weight, my waist has reduced and my wife says I’m looking so much better. I feel like I’m going to live longer after completing the Heart Health Program.

Speaking for me my general health has never been better, I have more energy and I am able to be more active with my life.
