Factsheet HSV137 - The Veterans’ Supplement in Residential Care

Purpose

This Factsheet provides information on how eligible veterans access the Veterans’ Supplement when they permanently enter Residential Care.

What is the Veterans’ Supplement in Residential Care?

The Veterans’ Supplement in Residential Care (Supplement) is available to residential aged care providers who care for veterans with service related mental health conditions. The Supplement is designed to ensure a veteran’s mental health condition does not act as a barrier to accessing appropriate care, and is paid directly to a residential aged care facility, on behalf of an eligible veteran.

Who is eligible?

Any veteran in a Commonwealth-subsidised residential aged care facility who has a mental health condition accepted by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) as related to their service may have the Supplement paid on their behalf. Payment may only occur if a veteran or their nominated representative(s) have consented to certain information being disclosed to the Department of Human Services (DHS) and their residential aged care provider.

There is no need for eligible veterans to apply or undergo an assessment for the Supplement to be paid to residential aged care facilities. War widow/ers and dependants are not eligible for the Supplement.

Am I obligated to provide my consent?

No. The Supplement will only be paid to your provider if you consent to the release of certain information to DHS which allows them to pay your residential aged care provider. This information confirms your DVA status meets the requirements for the Veterans’ Supplement in Residential Care payment and also includes your name and file number.

No details of your accepted mental health condition or any further information is shared with DHS or your residential aged care provider.

How much is the Veterans’ Supplement in Residential Care?

In 2018-19, the Supplement is $7.08 per day, per eligible veteran. The payment is made by DHS directly to the veteran’s residential aged care facility and will be ongoing for the period of care.
