We regret to advise that the Sandakan Memorial Park including the Sandakan Memorial Pavilion and Visitors Information Centre is temporarily closed to the public until further notice. This comes following the implementation by the Malaysian Government of a Targeted Enhanced Movement Control Order (TEMCO) commencing on 29 September 2020.
The TEMCO is aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19 in Sabah and allowing contact tracing to occur over the next two weeks after which time it is hoped the order will be lifted. While we apologise for any inconvenience this causes, the health and safety of all visitors and staff are paramount in the ongoing management of this site.
The Sandakan Memorial Park is adjacent to the site of the original Sandakan prisoner of war (POW) camp. For the visitor, the story of Sandakan is revealed at several memorial and interpretive stations around the park. This booklet has been designed to allow visitors to explore the park at their own pace. It contains information about the Sandakan POW camp, war relics used by the prisoners and important points of interest that convey the experiences of Sandakan POWs. Numbered posts on the ground correspond to the numbered information in this booklet.
