The forum convened in Canberra on Wednesday 23 March 2016.

Discussions covered a range of topics.

Updates to Veterans’ Vocational Rehabilitation Scheme

The Forum received an update on the Veterans’ Vocational Rehabilitation Scheme (VVRS).  The Forum was advised of the extension of psychosocial and medical management rehabilitation to the VVRS as of 20 March 2016, which will result in whole-of-person rehabilitation across all three Acts.

Mental and Social Health Update

The Forum was updated on the Department’s mental and social health initiatives.  Members were advised that pilot Peer to Peer Support Network Programs are currently underway in Townsville, Queensland, and Richmond, New South Wales.

Transition and Wellbeing Research Programme

The Forum received an update on the Transition and Wellbeing Research Programme.  There have been over 11,000 surveys completed and the researchers have commenced analysing the survey responses.

Coordinated Client Support Program

The Department provided The Forum with an introduction to the Coordinated Client Support program (CCS) and its implementation to date.  

Veterans’ Employment Assistance Initiative

The Forum were updated on the results of the 2015 pilot Veterans’ Employment Assistance Initiative.  Of the 100 participants in the first phase, 58 were successfully placed into civilian employment in a variety of industries.  The second phase commenced in South Australian in November 2015 and covers around 120 clients in both South Australia and Victoria, including 20 mental health clients.

Member Submissions

The Forum heard two member submissions, from The Warrior’s Return and Australian Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Veterans’ Association, regarding veteran homelessness and the Gold DVA Health Card respectively.

Guest Presentations

The Forum heard three guest presentations:

  • Ms Angela Metschke from the Department of Defence spoke to the Forum about her role as Army Wounded Injured and Ill Coordinator;
  • Ms Heather MacDonald from the Department of Human Services delivered a presentation on co-design; and 
  • Mr Andrew Condon CSC from the Aspen Foundation updated the Forum on the progress of the ESO Mapping Project currently being undertaken.

The next forum will meet on Thursday 21 July 2016.
