|Important notes:||Prior to the national commemoration, a service will be held at a nearby site within the same precinct to dedicate the Garden of the Grieving Mother and unveil a statue in the new park. The ceremony will begin at 9.30 am.|
Getting to the Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial, Ballarat, Victoria
Ballarat is located and hour and 15 minutes’ drive west of Melbourne. The Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial is located on the southern approaches to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, on Wendouree Parade and adjacent to Lake Wendouree, Ballarat.
Driving - Take the 110 km journey along the Western Freeway.
Train - Direct from Melbourne’s Southern Cross station, swipe your Myki to arrive in less than 90 minutes on the direct V/Line train at the 19th century-built Railway station right in the centre of town.
Airport - The road trip from Tullamarine or Avalon airports to Ballarat takes about one hour. Options to get you here direct from the airport include hiring a car, or booking the Airport Shuttlebus which departs from Tullamarine.
Detailed Services Program
The national service commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Fall of Singapore and the service and sacrifice of all Australian prisoners of war will take place on Wednesday 15 February 2017 at 11.00 am at the Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial in Ballarat, Victoria.
The service will be one of the key services of DVA’s Century of Service commemoration program in 2017.
The service will also commemorate the service and sacrifice of all Australian prisoners of war. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
DVA will be organising the service in association with the Trustees of the Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial.
A service to dedicate a new memorial to the families of service men and women who have been killed in action, the Garden of the Grieving Mother, will take place earlier in the morning. The service will commence at 9.30 am at the Arch of Victory in Sturt Street, Ballarat and will be hosted by the Arch of Victory/Avenue of Honour Committee.
Carlton Street will be closed on Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 February.
A Park and Ride option will be provided at nearby North Gardens. A shuttle will transfer members of the public to and from the Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial.
For those with accessibility requirements, parking has been reserved on Carlton Street as well as the Wendouree Parade service road. Be sure to show your Australian Disability Parking Permit to the traffic marshals so you can gain access. Accessible toilets will be available at the site.
