Don Spinks AM, Repatriation Commissioner

Don Spinks began his appointment as Repatriation Commissioner and Member of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission for a period of five years on 1 July 2019.

“I’m using my recent service experience to assist the Commission in addressing the contemporary issues faced by veterans and their families,” Don says.
“A significant part of my job is engaging with veterans (serving and ex-serving), their families, carers, ex-service organisations and others. It’s about listening to them and feeding their collective views back to the Minister, the Commissions and DVA.”

Don enlisted in the Australian Regular Army in January 1979. On completion of basic recruit training, he was assigned to the Royal Australian Armoured Corps.

He was promoted to Warrant Officer Class One in 1999. In 2000, he was selected to attend the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Fort Bliss, Texas where he completed the Sergeants Major and the Command Sergeants Major courses. He then served as an instructor at the academy the following year. For his service with the Sergeants Major Academy, he was awarded the US Army Meritorious Service Medal.

Don’s Regimental Sergeant Major appointments include: 2nd Cavalry Regiment 2003–2004; Multi-National Force and Observers—Sinai, Egypt 2004; Royal Australian Armoured Corps 2005–2007; 1st Brigade 2008–2009; Joint Task Force 633 on Operation Slipper 2010; and Forces Command—Army 2011–2014.

In July 2015, Don became the 10th Regimental Sergeant Major of the Australian Army. He completed this role in July 2018 and transitioned from Army in September 2018. In 2010, he completed the Army Single Service component of the Australian Command and Staff College Course at the Australian War College. In 2015, he completed the Company Directors Course (Not-for-Profit) at the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

In January 2007, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for meritorious service to the Royal Australian Armoured Corps and to the Multi-National Force and Observers – Sinai.

In June 2018, he was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia for exceptional service to soldiering within the Australian Defence Force in senior Regimental Sergeant Major appointments, culminating in the appointment of Regimental Sergeant Major of the Army.

As Repatriation Commissioner, Don is independent of DVA.
