Information about COVID-19 and the Saluting Their Service (STS) Commemorative Grants Program

COVID-19 represents a significant challenge both here in Australia and internationally.

The projects and activities your organisation delivers with STS grant funding continue to play an important role in supporting Australians and commemorating the service and sacrifice of Australian service personnel during this difficult time.

STS is a rolling grants program that runs all year.  The current round is still open for applications.  DVA and the Community Grants Hub (Hub) continue to accept and assess STS grant applications, offer grant agreements and manage grants already in place, at this time.

We are committed to working with our STS grant recipients who are affected by COVID-19 on options to continue your projects where possible.

If your organisation temporarily cannot operate, or deliver the project or activity that funding has been provided for (due to staffing impacts, your event has been postponed, or suppliers are unavailable to complete necessary works), please contact us.  DVA and the Hub will work with you to consider other options.  We would like to keep as many projects and activities running as possible, or able to be started again in the near future.

Contact your Funding Arrangement Manager to work with you to find a flexible solution.  If you can't contact your regular Funding Arrangement Manager, please contact the Community Grants Hub on support [at] communitygrants.gov.au or telephone 1800 020 283 (option 6).

Please note that arrangements may be different for other DVA grant programs, as their rounds operate differently.  Visit each programs' page for more information.

This advice will be updated if there are changes in the future.

Overview

The Saluting Their Service (STS) Commemorative Grants program is designed to preserve Australia's wartime heritage and to involve people throughout the nation in a wide range of projects and activities that highlight the service and sacrifice of Australia's servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations, and promote appreciation and understanding of the role that those who served have played in shaping the nation.

Two categories of grants are available under the STS program:

  1. Community Grants (STS-CG) — Grants up to a maximum of $10,000 are available for community-based commemorative projects and activities. This includes, for example, the building of community memorials and the preservation of wartime memorabilia that is significant locally but is not necessarily nationally significant.
  2. Major Grants (STS-MG) — Grants between $10,001 and $150,000 are available for major commemorative projects and activities that are significant from a national, state, territory and/or regional perspective.

Heritage considerations

If your project relates to restoring or changing an existing memorial or other commemorative artefact , there may be heritage and conservation considerations. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all local heritage requirements are met.

You may like to seek advice from your local council, RSL, the owner/custodian of the memorial, or your state or territory government heritage body.
