On 11 July 2013 Simon was appointed the Secretary of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, President of the Repatriation Commission and Chair of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission. He had been acting in these positions since 10 May 2013.

Simon’s public service experience spans a range of policy, service delivery and project management roles. He joined the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 1976, transferred to the Department of Defence’s Logistics Organisation in 1986, to the Department of Finance in 1990 and back to the Department of Defence in 2010.

Prior to his current appointment, Simon was the Associate Secretary Chief Operating Officer in the Department of Defence. He was responsible for bringing together the Chief Information Officer, Defence Support and People Strategies and Policy Groups into one organisation to deliver integrated corporate services to the Department. He was also responsible for the Strategic Reform Management Office and the Ministerial and Executive Coordination and Communication Division.

During Simon’s career, he has been responsible for implementing shared services reform as part of the Defence Strategic Reform Program, heading up the T3 Sale Taskforce which successfully delivered the $16b Telstra 3 Public Offer in November 2006 and heading the Secretariat for the Kinnaird Review, which delivered a report to Government with findings and recommendations relating to improving Defence procurement processes and outcomes.

In 2001 Simon was awarded the Centenary Medal for public service and in 2007 he was awarded the Public Service Medal. He has qualifications in economics, public administration and computing studies.
