Message from the Secretary

Elizabeth (Liz) Cosson AM CSC

Photo of Elizabeth (Liz) Cosson AM CSC, Secretary of the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA)The Invictus Games, being held in Sydney in October, is an event bringing together more than 500 veterans from 18 nations to compete in 11 different adaptive sporting events.

As a veteran myself who served 31 years in the Australian Army, I am honoured to lead the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to ensure that we always put veterans and their families first.

During the Invictus Games DVA is hosting a series of important forums to draw together some of Australia’s and the world’s leading experts in policy, research and service delivery.

The events are a Families Forum and Employment Forum on 18 October and an Invictus 18 Symposium on 19 October where experts will share best practice ideas and programs for these vital areas of veteran support.

Discussions from these events will contribute to the International Ministerial (5 Eyes) Conference, which brings together Veterans’ Affairs Ministers from Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and New Zealand. The outcome is to establish an agreed course of action, both domestically and internationally, to improve the lives of veterans, particularly in the areas of transition, health and wellbeing, education and employment.

At the conclusion of the Games, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester will host a Veterans Ministers’ Round Table meeting with his state and territory counterparts. This meeting is to further progress the good work and best practice models that were discussed throughout these forums and during the Games.

It is vitally important that we leverage the Games to constantly move forward to produce positive outcomes for Australian and international veterans and their families.

I wish all competitors in the Games the best of luck. I know our Australian team and our international visitors will enjoy their time in Sydney and will make lasting friendships from these Games in a spirit of comradery that only veterans understand.

We are all united in the one goal, to advance the cause of veterans and their families.

Liz Cosson AM CSC
