“Just keep breathing; that’s
all there is to it.”
Peter Casserly recently celebrated 106
years of living, and breathing, his simple philosophy, which helped
carry him through the battles of the First World War. Mr Casserly
is WA’s last survivor of that conflict.
Like many others at the time, Mr Casserly
was keen to serve his country and enlisted at the age of 19. He
was heading for France almost before he knew it, and certainly
before his family did.“I was sitting on the ship and I thought
I’d better let Mum know I was going, so I wrote her a letter,
sealed it in a bottle and sent it sea post.”
His longevity seems to symbolise the
stubborn and resilient nature of our Diggers.“We were there to
do a job and we did it, that was all.”
