Healthy Ageing includes Healthy Eating

Almost one million Australians aged over 55 years are seriously overweight, according to The Statistical Bulletin on Obesity Trends in Older Australians, which is available on the Australian Government’s dedicated seniors website at www.seniors.gov.au. Australians in their fifties and sixties are continuing to gain weight as they get older and are six to seven kilograms heavier than their counterparts 20 years ago. Overweight Australians have an increased risk of suffering chronic diseases such as diabetes and arthritis.

Healthy Ageing is a major focus of the Australian Government’s National Strategy for an Ageing Australia. The approach aims to improve the physical, mental and emotional well being of older Australians through promoting healthy lifestyles.

Eat Well for Life is a free booklet and pamphlet, providing a practical guide to the Dietary Guidelines for Older Australians and is available by phoning Department of Health and Ageing on 1800 020 103 (ext 8654).

A new website, giving the latest and best advice about healthy living, has been launched by the Australian Government. It can be found on www.healthyandactive.health.gov.au.

Secret to a Long Life

“Just keep breathing; that’s all there is to it.”

Peter Casserly recently celebrated 106 years of living, and breathing, his simple philosophy, which helped carry him through the battles of the First World War. Mr Casserly is WA’s last survivor of that conflict.

Like many others at the time, Mr Casserly was keen to serve his country and enlisted at the age of 19. He was heading for France almost before he knew it, and certainly before his family did.“I was sitting on the ship and I thought I’d better let Mum know I was going, so I wrote her a letter, sealed it in a bottle and sent it sea post.”

His longevity seems to symbolise the stubborn and resilient nature of our Diggers.“We were there to do a job and we did it, that was all.”
