RULES FOR EVERYONE
- Three entries in total may be submitted. ( You may submit 4 entries if your 4th entry is from the Special “Peacekeeping” Category 1E.)
- Entry Forms must be posted by the closing date of the competition.
- Writing and poetry entries may be posted or e-mailed. Arts entries must be delivered to the Red Cross Centre at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.
- Entry is subject to the SWAC Steering Committee’s discretion.
- Entries must be original work.
- Entries must not have been submitted in previous years.
- Entries will not be accepted which the Steering Committee deems may be interpreted as glorifying the wartime activities of countries which fought against Australia or her allies.
- Prizes and Awards are dependent on funding available and subject to change without notice.
- In each category the judge may select first, second, and third prize winning entries, and up to four honourable mentions. The number of prizes awarded in each category will be at the discretion of the judge.
- The judges’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
- Entry of all items is at the entrant’s own risk. Delivery and collection of items is the responsibility of entrants.
- All care will be taken but no responsibility is accepted for damage, theft or other mishaps.
- The SWAC Steering Committee reserves the right not to display all visual entries if display space at the Exhibition venue is limited.
- The winning Art, Craft and Photography entries will be retained until the conclusion of the Prize Presentation Ceremony in N ovember.
- Entries sold during the Exhibition over $50.00 attract a 10% commission payable to SWAC.
- You must also read the “additional rules” for your particular section/s.
NOVICE
The definition of “Novice” for the purposes of this competition
is an entrant who:
- has not previously won a major prize in this or any other competition for the particular medium in question;
- has entered this competition for at least 3 years in the same category but wishes to remain in the “Novice” section at their own discretion;
- or is deemed to be a “Novice” by the Steering Committee.
EXPERIENCED
The definition of “Experienced” for the purposes of this competition
is an entrant who:
- has won major prizes (1st, 2nd, 3rd) in the Novice category for the medium in question;
- has won major prizes in any other competition for the medium in question;
- has entered under the “Novice” category for at least 3 years and wishes to enter “Experienced” at their own discretion; or
- is deemed to be “Experienced” by the Steering Committee.
ADVANCED
The definition of “Advanced” for the purposes of this competition
is an entrant who:
- has previously won a first prize in the Experienced category of the medium in question;
- has won major prizes in other competitions;
- is an accomplished or professional artist in the medium in question,
or
is deemed to be “Advanced” by the Steering Committee.
ADDITIONAL RULES FOR WRITING ENTRIES
- Writing entries MUST NOT exceed 3,000 words in length.
- Entries must be works that have not been published.
- A chapter from an unpublished book is acceptable provided it does not exceed the 3000-word limit.
- Include a title page with your name, identification details and the title of your entry.
- Entries should be submitted on A4 size paper and must be stapled or fixed in the top left-hand corner.
- Type written entries are strongly preferred but hand written entries, provided they are readable, are acceptable and will not disadvantage you.
- Entries should be typed or written on one side of the page only.
- All True Wartime Experience stories (Category 1A) will be forwarded to the Australian War Memorial Private Records collection upon completion of the competition.
- Only copies of your work should be submitted, not original manuscripts.
ADDITIONAL RULES FOR ART
- Your name, DVA or other identification number, the title of your entry, whether it is for sale and the sale price should be written on the back UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER of the picture.
- The Steering Committee reserves the right to change the category under which a painting is to be judged.
- Except in the Oils-Novice or Other Media-Novice Categories, reproductions of works by other people will not be permitted. Clear indication that the entry is a reproduction must be shown on the entry form and the work itself.
- Entries should be framed and a secure method of hanging ( eye hooks, wire or some other acceptable method) must be provided by the entrant.
- Care should be taken that the same details appear on the entry form as on the submitted artwork. In all cases of discrepancy, the information on the entry form will be taken as correct.
- The category “Oils” has been differentiated from the “Other Media” category due to the numbers of oil paintings submitted, and is not a reflection on the relative difficulty of different techniques.
ADDITIONAL RULES FOR CRAFT
- Your name, DVA identification number, the title of your entry, whether it is for sale and the sale price should be written on the back .
- Where craft entries are framed or are intended to be hung on a wall a secure method of hanging either by eye hooks and wire or some other acceptable method must be provided by the entrant.
- Care should be taken that the same details appear on the entry form as on the submitted craft work. In all cases of discrepancy, the information on the entry form will be taken as correct.
- The Steering Committee reserves the right to change the category under which a craft work is to be judged.
- Category 3A Textile & Fibre entries include, but are not limited to knitting, crochet, tatting, macrame, silk painting, decoupage, papier maché and weaving.
- Category 3B Needlework entries are those produced through the act of working with a needle . They include, but are not limited to sewing, tapestry, cross stitch, embroidery, needle point and quilting.
ADDITIONAL RULES FOR PHOTOGRAPHY
- Original work only.
- Your name, DVA or other identification number, the title of your entry, whether for sale and the sale price should be written on the back of the entry or otherwise firmly attached.
- Photographs may be processed either at home or commercially.
- Photographs must be mounted BUT NOT framed.
- Photographs must not exceed 40cm x 50cm. (16'" to 20")
- It must be noted on the entry form if photographs have been altered digitally.
PUBLICATION OF WINNING ENTRIES
Entrants should note that major prize and special award winning entries will be published on this SWAC web site and also in BRAVO! – Recollections and Reflections of the Veteran Community 2008.
All entrants will receive a free copy of BRAVO! 2008 when it is available.
Editions of Bravo! are also for sale from the SWAC co-ordinator.
