Photography Judge: Danielle Edwards
Ms Danielle Edwards BA, BAPPSc (hons), AAIMBI, FIPT Danielle has been a practising medical photographer for 16 years, she is a Registered Biological Illustrator. She has been an industry mentor, judge/assessor for the RMIT Bachelor Applied Science Photography course.  Danielle has been conference convenor, exhibition co-coordinator, council member and President for the Institute of Photographic Technology in addition she has exhibited her own personal photography.

Walter Waites –  A Message
Walter served with the 455 Squadron and was based in Europe, including Coastal Command, Bomber Command and Transport Command from 1940 to 1946.  He first began amateur photography as a young person.  This photo was taken in remarkable circumstances in Murmansk, Russia.  Along with the 144 Squadron, 455 Squadron flew to Russia protecting a convoy, but the aircraft could not return.

2nd Prize
Roger King –  Lift Off
Roger served with the 9 RAR in Vietnam during 1968 to 1969 and was attached to a dog tracking team.  He was first interested in photography at 16 years old and took many photos while in the army.  After having his stories and photos published in several magazines, he wanted other people to also share his memories of that time. 

3rd Prize
Nelson Varker –  Seventh Divvy
Nelson enlisted in the Citizen Military Forces in 1943 and then in 1945 was posted to the 2/33 BN 7th Division AIF unit in Borneo.  He was first interested in photography during wartime service and then continued with his family and holiday snaps.  He was inspired to enter this year’s SWAC due to the advertisement and encouragement from a staff member at MECWA. 

The Vietnam Veterans’ Association of Australia Encouragement Award
Rod Quarrell – I Hope the Extra Starching is Bullet Proof
Rod Quarrell served with the 1 RAR A Coy 1 PL in Vietnam during 1968 to 1969.  He currently does various voluntary work with the Vietnam Veterans education section by talking to school and community groups about Vietnam.  Rod started photography during his time in Vietnam and he believes that his photo shows the true spirit of the Australian soldier in Vietnam.

1st Prize
Kimberly Mackay – My Dad
Kimberly’s father – Robert Mackay served in Vietnam during 1969 to 1970 in the Army.  Kimberly first started photography during year 10 at high school and currently works part time in a photography studio.  Her inspiration for this entry was the emotions of the time during her dad’s service in Vietnam and to the present time.

2nd Prize
Percy Titchener – Himalayan Reflection
Percy Titchener served in Vietnam as an infantry section commander, with the Tracker Platoon and 3 Platoon, 6 RAR / NZ ANZAC Btn during 1969 to 1970.   This photo was taken recently while trekking through the Himalayan Mountains.

3rd Prize
Bill Blackburn – The World We Share
Bill’s father  Stanley Blackburn served briefly with the Army, before serving as a Petty Officer in the Navy where he serviced optical equipment.  Bill first began photography as a 20 year old in the early 1970’s, as an aid and an extension to his enthusiasm for natural history.  His inspiration to create this entry was to produce images from left of field, rather than purely aiming for the prefect pretty picture.

Regular Defence Force Welfare Association Viewers’ Choice Award – Photography
Christopher White – Urangan Pier
Christopher White served with the RAN during 1965 to 1974 in various HMA Ships and establishments.  He also served on HMAS Sydney in 1965 during trip to Vietnam.  He commenced photography during a trip in 2004, where he was inspired by the beauty and uniqueness of the Australian outback and countryside.  This photo was created and inspired by the colours and serenity in the picture.
