Annual Veteran Health Checks available for transitioning ADF members from 1 July 2019

Woman and man in consultation

Friday, 12 July 2019 — All Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who transition from 1 July 2019 with at least one day of continuous full-time service are able to gain access to a fully funded comprehensive health check from their General Practitioner (GP) each year for the first five years, following transition.

Funded under DVA item numbers MT701, MT703, MT705 and MT707, the Veteran Health Check is specifically designed for veterans. It is an opportunity for GPs to build an understanding of their veteran patient’s health and wellbeing, and identify and support the onset of physical and mental health conditions that are common in the years following transition.

The aim is to encourage early intervention to promote better health outcomes for veterans during their transition to civilian life.

Based on the needs of their patient, GPs can bill for sessions of up to one hour or more to undertake the assessment. A 45-minute consultation is recommended.

Some key medical conditions that can impact on former service personnel, both in the immediate and longer term, include musculoskeletal conditions, hearing loss, tinnitus, PTSD and other mental health conditions, and other health issues that can arise from their military training and/or active service.

Veterans will need to present their DVA Veteran Card to gain access to the fully funded Annual Veteran Health Check.

A Veteran Health Assessment Tool and guide has been designed specifically for use by GPs to undertake the assessment with their veteran patients. The tool is accessible through the Best Practice and Medical Director software packages. GPs can also gain access to the tool on the At-Ease — Professionals.

One-off Veteran Health Check for all veterans

The new Annual Veteran Health Check initiative builds on the existing One-off Veteran Health Check (also known as the One-off ADF Post Discharge GP Health Assessment).

Veterans that transitioned prior to 30 June 2019, will still be able to gain access to the One-off Veteran Health Check at any time after they transition. The One-off Veteran Health Check is available for all former serving ADF members. A Medicare rebate is available for this.
