War widows and orphans
War widow's pension and orphan's pension are paid to compensate widowed partners or orphaned children of veterans whose deaths have been accepted as being related to their war service or eligible defence service (including peacekeeping and hazardous service) rendered before 1 July 2004.
These pensions are paid automatically in cases where, at the time of their death, the veteran was receiving a disability pension at the Special Rate (including Temporary Special Rate), the Intermediate Rate, or a disability pension with the Extreme Disablement Adjustment (EDA). Automatic payment will also occur where the veteran was an Australian ex-prisoner of war or had certain prescribed disabilities.
Compensation payments may be made to dependent partners and children of Australian Defence Force members or former members who die as a result of eligible service rendered on or after 1 July 2004. For information see Factsheets:
