Anzac Commemorative Site showing seating areas

The Anzac Commemorative Site, Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair fall within the Gallipoli Peninsula Historical National Park.  All infrastructure is brought in to accommodate the many thousands of Australian and New Zealand visitors to the area during the Anzac Day period.

The temporary facilities brought in for Anzac Day are designed, installed and located so there is minimal impact on the environment.

This picture shows the Anzac Commemorative Site, North Beach, at Gallipoli as crowds begin to arrive (taken 24 April 2010).

The Aegean Sea features in the foreground, while the surrounding bushland that restricts the site capacity is also clearly visible.

On Anzac Day, crowds will be seated in the red seating stands and will gather on the grass directly in front of each stand.

Infrastructure such as staging, lighting and other facilities can also be seen.

Australian Peacekeepers

 Image Description
Peacekeepers in the Western Sahara

Western Sahara. 1991-12. Undertaking peacekeeping duties in the desert between Laayonne and Oum Dreyga are Corporal (Cpl) Colin Gamble, rigger, of Cunnamulla, Qld, and Stafford Heights, Qld, with Cpl Greg Scanlon, linesman, of Hillston, NSW, and Ferny Grove, Qld. They are members of a 40-man Australian Army contingent (mostly from the 1st Signals Regiment) with the United Nations peacekeeping force in Western Sahara (MINURSO), providing communications for 3,000 UN peacekeeping soldiers from thirty countries, monitoring a ceasefire and organising a referendum to give the people a choice between independence or integration with neighbouring Morocco.

Western Sahara. 1991-12. Corporal Mark Underwood, radio operator, of Beaufort near Ballarat, Vic, and Bracken Ridge, Qld, giving gifts of an Australian flag and stuffed toy koala to Laayonne people. He is one of 40 Australian soldiers on a six-month tour of duty with the United Nations peacekeeping force. The Australian contingent is providing communications to the United Nations Mission for the Referendum (MINURSO) in the Western Sahara - a peacekeeping force made up of more than 3000 soldiers from thirty countries who are monitoring a ceasefire and organising a referendum to allow the people of Western Sahara to choose between independence or integration with the neighbouring country of Morocco.

Three of the first four Australian peacekeepers stand in front of an aircraft with Charles Eaton, the then Acting Australian Consul-General in Batavia (now Jakarta), Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia). The Australians were the first to arrive of a group of military observers requested by the Consular Commission, a body set up by the United Nations to report on observance of a ceasefire between Dutch and Indonesian Republican forces. Eaton was the Australian representative on the Consular Commission. Pictured left to right: Commander H S Chesterman, RAN; Eaton; Brigadier L G H Dyke, Australian Army, the officer in charge of the Australian group; Major D L Campbell, Australian Army. Not pictured is the fourth observer, Squadron Leader L T Spence, RAAF, who was later killed in Korea; he may have taken the photograph. Chesterman and Campbell were later attached to the United Nations Good Offices Committee (UNGOC), which worked to help the parties negotiate a settlement.

Image rationale for Anzac Cove works update

The following five images depict the progressive impact of erosion at Anzac Cove and illustrate the works that have been conducted to protect the area.

This image was taken in April 2011.  Along the beach there are areas where the erosion was quite extensive.

The surface of the slope along the top of Anzac Cove

It is clear that something needed to be done to make sure the surface of the slope was stabilised, and the road wasn’t undermined.

This photo was taken in April 2011, walking from Beach Cemetery to Ari Burnu along the top of Anzac Cove.

This image was taken in March 2012 and shows the new sea wall linking together with existing wall along the neighbouring North beach.

The cemeteries at Ari Burnu and beach are protected from further erosion and will not be lost to the sea.

The upgraded road surface of Anafartlar Road, looking down onto Anzac Cove

This image was taken in March 2012 and shows the upgraded road surface of Anafartlar Road, looking down onto Anzac Cove.

Improved drainage is visible on the beach side below the road. This drain will capture the run off from the slopes without compromising the integrity of the road and the beach.

The completed sea wall

This image was taken in March 2012 and shows the completed sea wall – the slope will be further stabilised with vegetation prior to Anzac Day 2012.

Future visitors will still be able to walk along the sand of Anzac Cove where the Anzacs landed 97 years ago. This may not have been possible without the preservation workds including the construction of this sea wall.

Works begin at Anzac Cove

This image shows a comparison between the effectiveness of a sea wall versus no sea wall.  This photo was taken the southern end of Anzac Cove, near Beach Cemetery, in March 2006.

  • The sea wall at Beach Cemetery was constructed in the 1980’s.
  • Note there are graves above this sea wall, at Beach Cemetery
  • It is worth noting the graves above this sea wall would have been lost and the remains exposed and washed out to the sea if the wall had not been constructed.
Further erosion of the headland, taken in April 2009

Works begin at Anzac Cove

This image shows the same headland three years later, in April 2009 – this image was taken a little further back and shows further erosion of the slope.

  • After a heavy storm and wave action, or winter period of wave action, the cliff face here is eroded at the base and then natural material (weak sandstone rock) falls from the face of the cliff
  • The fallen material then gets pulverised by the waves and forms sand, which is then carried away along the coast by wave and current action
  • Depending on what part of this cycle we observe the beach, there will be more or less sand evident. The pebbles and cobbles remain because they are heavier, and the sand is washed away from amongst the pebbles.

  • The slope from the road down to the beach will be flattened and landscaped with natural local vegetation.

Battle of the Java Sea commemoration and wreath laying service - Sydney Cenotaph

Minister for Veterans' Affairs, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP addresses the guests at the memorial service for the Battle of the Java Sea.

The Battle of the Java Sea was a major naval battle of the Pacific campaign of the First World War. Allied navies suffered a disastrous defeat at the hand of the Imperial Japanese Navy, on 27 February 1942, and in secondary actions over successive days. The American-British-Dutch-Australian Command (ABDA) commander, Admiral Karel Doorman was killed. The aftermath of the battle included several smaller actions around Java, including the smaller but also significant Battle of Sunda Strait. Images courtesy of Defence Digital Media.
