 |
Works begin at Anzac Cove
This image shows a comparison between the effectiveness of a sea wall versus no sea wall. This photo was taken the southern end of Anzac Cove, near Beach Cemetery, in March 2006.
- The sea wall at Beach Cemetery was constructed in the 1980’s.
- Note there are graves above this sea wall, at Beach Cemetery
- It is worth noting the graves above this sea wall would have been lost and the remains exposed and washed out to the sea if the wall had not been constructed.
|
 |
Works begin at Anzac Cove
This image shows the same headland three years later, in April 2009 – this image was taken a little further back and shows further erosion of the slope.
- After a heavy storm and wave action, or winter period of wave action, the cliff face here is eroded at the base and then natural material (weak sandstone rock) falls from the face of the cliff
- The fallen material then gets pulverised by the waves and forms sand, which is then carried away along the coast by wave and current action
- Depending on what part of this cycle we observe the beach, there will be more or less sand evident. The pebbles and cobbles remain because they are heavier, and the sand is washed away from amongst the pebbles.
|
 |
Works begin at Anzac Cove
This graphic shows the cross section of the design concept of a sea wall at the back of the beach.
- Beach at Anzac Cove maintained.
- The slope from the road down to the beach will be flattened and landscaped with natural local vegetation.

Battle of the Java Sea commemoration and wreath laying service - Sydney Cenotaph
Minister for Veterans' Affairs, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP addresses the guests at the memorial service for the Battle of the Java Sea.
The Battle of the Java Sea was a major naval battle of the Pacific campaign of the First World War. Allied navies suffered a disastrous defeat at the hand of the Imperial Japanese Navy, on 27 February 1942, and in secondary actions over successive days. The American-British-Dutch-Australian Command (ABDA) commander, Admiral Karel Doorman was killed. The aftermath of the battle included several smaller actions around Java, including the smaller but also significant Battle of Sunda Strait. Images courtesy of Defence Digital Media. |
