REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT OF AUSTRALIAN WAR GRAVES

How much funding has the Government committed?

  • $4.5 million over four years for the Office of Australian War Graves to maintain war graves in Australia and overseas.

What work will be undertaken with this funding?

  • Replacement or repair of war graves which have reached their life expectancy (approximately 75 years).
  • Continuation of the rolling programme of upgrading war cemeteries in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
  • Replacement or modification of buildings which no longer meet requirements.
  • Replacement of essential equipment.

Why has the Government allocated this funding?

  • The Government recognises the need to repair and replace aging war graves to respect our war dead in Australia and overseas.
  • As the average age of our war graves increase, the number which require replacement also increases.
  • Overseas memorials constructed during the past decade will require refurbishment to maintain current standards of excellence.
