SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Refurbishment and Renovation2002 saw the refurbishment of the office and registry area of the OAWG South Australian depot. Designed by Jackman Parken Evans, work was carried out by Richardson Builders. All existing office fixtures were removed and the walls extended to provide more space but still maintain the lines of the building. In conjunction with the renovation of the office area, work also commenced on the gazebo in the Contemplation Area. All existing timber lattice was removed and replaced. The structure has now had a polycarbonate roof installed to provide protection from the weather, while still maintaining the visual integrity of the structure. Public InterestThe ABC program Stateline interviewed the OAWG South Australian State Manger, Mr Keith Thorogood on 17 May 2002. Issues arose in South Australia regarding tenure of war graves and the interview was to clarify OAWG’s responsibility and treatment of graves from the Vietnam War. The interview was especially aimed at those who were killed in action and buried throughout South Australia. TheftIn the early hours of 16 June 2002, a wall mounted camera and radio link for the closed circuit television system at the South Australian Garden of Remembrance was stolen. Repairs have been carried out, concentrated on making the replacement equipment theft-proof.
HorticultureA horticultural upgrade of the Mildura War Cemetery was undertaken in August. The work included removal of Sword Fern weeds and a general tidy up of the garden bed areas. Disabled AccessNew stainless steel handrails have been installed in the South Australian GRM in order to comply with regulations and guidelines under OH&S legislation and also current Building Acts, as well as providing disabled access to the area.

Thank you for your letter re the memorial for my late wife. Since my first contact with your staff and the placement of the memorial I must acknowledge the pleasant and sensitive manner extended to me. I was aware of the memorial when visiting Centennial Park. We were married during the war — Betty was a beautiful lady in every respect. Thank you in appreciation.
