Occupational Health and Safety

DVA’s Workplace Injury Prevention and Management Strategy (WIPMS) continues to strive for reductions in the number and severity of work-related injuries to minimise their impact on individuals, work areas and the Department as a whole. More information on WIPMS is provided under 'People strategies’ in the 'Our people' chapter.

Activities undertaken during 2004–05 aimed at providing a safe and healthy workplace and preventing workplace injury included:

  • delivery of training for fire wardens, first aid officers and health and safety representatives and short courses in OH&S for managers and staff;
  • providing free influenza vaccinations;
  • providing hepatitis vaccinations for first aid officers;
  • providing free, confidential counselling for staff and their families through the Employee Assistance Program; and
  • undertaking health promotion activities, including:
    • the Better Health program in South Australia, which incorporated a healthy recipe contest, health education sessions and initiatives to encourage moderate exercise; and
    • the Staff Wellness program in Western Australia, which involved healthy recipes, massages and commemorative walks, using pedometers.

Under section 68 of the Occupational Health and Safety (Commonwealth Employment) Act 1991, employers are required to notify serious accidents or dangerous occurrences to the Commission for the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation of Commonwealth Employees. During the year three accidents or dangerous occurrences were notified.

Please see 'Measure: Our workplace - Occupational Health and Safety', in the 'Support Services’ chapter, for further information.
