How to use these reports

These reports are designed to meet the requirements of Parliament and information needs of our community.

We continue to deliver high-quality reporting and information to wide-ranging target audiences. Our readership includes Members of Parliament, ex-service organisations, health bodies, specialist organisations, the media, potential employees, consultants, veterans and the wider community.

The Repatriation Commission section (Part 1 in the print version of the annual report) reports on the activities and strategic directions of the Commission. It includes information concerning the functions, powers and structure of the Commission, health matters, information technology, commemoration activities and the Commission's relationship with the Department and with ex-service organisations.

The Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission section (Part 2 in the print version) is the first annual report for the newly established Commission formed on 27 April 2004. The report includes an overview of the Commission, its founding members, functions of the MRCC and strategic directions.

The Department of Veterans' Affairs section (Part 3 in the print version) details the activities, management and accountability of the Department. It provides an overview of the Department including our Outcome/Output structure, key result areas and the organisation structure. The five Outcome chapters provide a description of departmental programs, activities undertaken during the year, performance measures and trends.

Printing the annual report

The annual report is provided in HTML for accessibility reasons, and in Adobe Acrobat PDF format for printing.

To get an accurate rendering of information, we recommend that you print from the PDF versions. If you choose to print the HTML pages, please be aware that some information could drop off the printed page. This applies particularly to financial tables.

PDF versions of each section of the annual report are located in a PDF library. Choose the 'PDF' tab at the top of the navigation panel on the annual report home page to see a list of sections.

Each section of every report also has a link to the PDF version of that section at the top of every page.

The entire report is also available as a single PDF document but the file size is quite large (7.5 Mb).

Note: To view PDF files you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader on your system. For more information about Acrobat and PDF files, see a PDF help page on the DVA website.

Navigating around the reports

The navigation panel at the left of every screen is constant throughout each of the three reports. Choosing a top-level link (e.g. 'Annual report of the Department of Veterans' Affairs') will open up the table of contents for that report. You can then navigate to any part of the report from any point in that report, or move to a different report by choosing a different top-level link.

The crest in the top left corner of the screen is a quick link to the main DVA website, and there is also a link called 'DVA home' at the foot of every page.

Breadcrumb trail

There is a 'breadcrumb' trail at the top of the content area in each screen with links to preceding pages or chapters. The breadcrumbs show where the current page fits within the current chapter and so on. You can choose any of these links to go back one or more levels, or to go directly to the annual report home page if you find you are lost in the document. From the home page, you can choose where to go next.

Previous and Next

'Previous' and 'Next' links at the bottom of pages take you to the next page of the section you are in. This is particularly important where a long page has been broken into smaller pages and is continued onto the next screen.

Searching

If you want to find something specific in the annual report, choose 'Search' at the top of the screen to go to a 'Search' page.

The annual report uses the Google search engine. Type the word(s) you are looking for into the Google seach box and press the 'Search' button. Google will search the annual report and return search results on a page that looks different to the annual report.

Note that main search results will link back to the annual report. You may ignore the 'sponsored links' on the right of the screen.

Text size

If you need to increase the size of the text for easier reading on screen, use the plus image  plus image near 'Text Size' at the top right of the screen. The text can be increased by four sizes, and then decreased back to its starting size using the minus image Minus image. The text cannot be made smaller than its starting size. Note that enlarging the text will push the page off the right of the screen so you will have to scroll horizontally to read the page.

Note: For the text re-sizing to work, you will need to allow a session cookie to be copied to your computer. A cookie is a collection of information containing a unique session ID that is stored on your computer. Cookies are used chiefly by websites to identify users who have previously registered or visited their site. Session-based cookies are short-lived, are used only during a browsing session, and expire when you close your browser. Once you have closed your browser, the session cookie is destroyed and DVA does not maintain any personal information that might identify you should you visit our website at a later date.

Financial statements

The financial statements in Appendix I and J are available in HTML and PDF formats. The HTML versions are text based and are fully searchable but are difficult to read on screen and do not print very well. In some cases, figures visible on screen might not appear when printed. Additionally, some of these online pages have been broken into shorter sections and continued onto the next screen. The PDF equivalent versions have not been broken into smaller sections and are more suitable for printing. But note that some of the PDFs are quite large and may take some time to download.

Going to the main DVA website

The Australian Government design in the top left corner of the screen is linked to the main DVA website. There is also a link to the DVA site at the foot of every page. In this position, you will also find links to the DVA privacy and other legal statements.

There are links within the text in some pages that point to related material on the DVA website or other sites. If you use one of these links to leave the annual report, use the 'Back' button in your browser toolbar, or hit the 'Backspace' key on the keyboard, to return to your place in the annual report.
